Learn about results from CDC’s newly released 2021 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) showed that nearly 1 in 3 high school students reported substance use in the last 30 days. Discuss strategies that build pro-social relationships among students and staff, provide alternative activities, and reduce harm. Panelists will share how some supports they are implementing may be implemented in secondary education to help students transition. Assets: Substance abuse encompasses a harmful pattern of use of alcohol, tobacco products, and illegal drugs; this includes the presence of substance use and trade within school and campus environments and during school-related activities.

While Maryland has made substantial progress in reducing cigarette use among youth overall, new products, such as vapes, along with aggressive marketing toward youth, require additional action to prevent youth from becoming the next generation facing harm from these products. In response, the Maryland Department of Health’s Center for Tobacco Prevention and Control has partnered with the Community-based; Advocacy-focused; Data-Driven; Coalition-Building; Association (CADCA) to support a youth-led, adult-guided Statewide Youth Movement against tobacco use/vaping among youth in Maryland.
